Youth Awards for Social Initiatives

2006 - 2007 : Gender Equality

Also see YASI 2004-2005 : HIV/AIDS
YASI logo

This time YASI covered Kolkata city and three southern districts of West Bengal; South & North 24 Paragnas and Howrah.

Trainings were aimed at creating Changemakers, who would commit to making a change in their own lives, and influencing their peers in creating a more just society without discrimination and violence against women.

About 10,000 Changemakers were created over a period of 10 months (June '06 to March '07)

Unlike its predecessor, YASI 06 -07 was a noncompetitive process. All youth initiatives were showcased, and acknowledged as equals in the final event.

Pilot & Launch

June - August 2006

A two month pilot was conducted before the launch of the programme to build partnerships, fine tune implementation systems and assess communication needs.

The project was launched in August 2006 amongst youth networks, youth groups and colleges.

Four Partner youth groups (RKS, YUVA, BSS and YFD) who had participated in YASI 2004-05 stepped up to take forward the work in the districts.

Stage I : Training

June 2006 to March 2007

3600 young people across different sections of society were trained. These young people were the first to take the oath to become Changemakers.

Stage II : Hand holding of Teams

November 2006 to March 2007

Young people planned individually as well as in groups to create more Changemakers. Over 30 proposals were received. In consultation with the partner organisations and Thoughtshop Foundation, the teams developed their ideas, upgraded their knowledge and skills to be able to conduct events.
28 "planning sessions" were organised at different locations, and this process ran parallel to Stage III...

Stage III : Youth Initiatives

November 2006 to March 2007

Over a period of 5 months, Changemakers had organised nearly 50 events in Kolkata and neighbouring districts, reaching out to create another 6400 Changemakers. These events were monitored and documented by a team of observers.
