Gender & Emergencies

Oxfam GB, EIO has been working in the flood prone basins of Bihar and Assam, supporting relief, rehabilitation and disaster preparedness programmes.

In their assessment, women show exemplary strength and resilience in rebuilding homes and communities after the floods. However their efforts mostly go unrecognised.

This tool was a part of a strategy to

draw attention to the challenges women face during floods, make the community recognize their contribution, become more sensitive to their needs and invite women's participation in decision making.

About the kit

The kit has two main components: Picture Cards and Banner

Picture Cards

The set of 8 sequenced picture cards comprise the interactive component of the kit, for use by facilitators with communities during disaster preparedness meetings.

The images depict situations in which men and women are taking equal responsibility; including actions men and women take throughout the year, in anticipation of the floods, or after the waters recede.

Each card has a simple question and answer (in Assamese and Hindi) to help the facilitator discuss the issue.

Banner

This is the stand alone component with a single message about equal participation of women and men.

The banner is for display in public places, in communities where the interactive sessions have already taken place. It is meant to serve as a reminder of the issues discussed during the interactive sessions.
