Participatory Hygiene And Sanitation Transformation toolkit for rural communities, West Bengal.

The PHAST method was created in 1992; the result of a joint programme of WHO and the UNDP / World Bank Water and Sanitation Programme. This methodology is being used in many developing countries across the world.

In 2003, GKW Consult adopted the PHAST approach for its Bolpur-Raghunathpur Water Supply, Sanitation and Health Education Project in West Bengal.

This was done with the objective of strengthening its hygiene and sanitation promotional activities and to facilitate communities to move from problem identification and analysis to problem solving actions. All the NGO teams were trained and learnt the appropriate use of PHAST materials.

Thoughtshop Foundation developed the set of cards after examining the PHAST method, observing the scenario in which it is used, and understanding the requirements of the health workers and the Partner.
Pictures had to capture the characteristic features and details of the project areas; habitation and environment, customs, dresses, utensils. Such details are important to help participants identify themselves in the situations visualised.
