Emergency Relief Campaign

Following the flood relief operations of the West Bengal Floods of 2000, Save the Children UK, felt the need to launch an awareness campaign highlighting the special needs of children during emergencies.
SCF wanted to target government officials, donor organisations, local organisations and individuals to include children's needs in their relief operations.

Thoughtshop Foundation proposed a strategy that first acknowledged the efforts of government officials, and local people and then drew attention to the messages that needed to be given.

The Strategy

For Government Officials
A felicitation event presided by the District Magistrates of Nadia and North 24 Parganas at which local people who had done exemplary work were awarded certificates.

A team from Thoughtshop Foundation traveled to the worst affected areas in the flood ravaged districts and selected 25 individuals and organisations amongst the many heroes to be awarded certificates of honour.

The stories of these simple villagers who had risked their lives were highlighted and created an inspirational atmosphere to discuss flood relief operations in a constructive manner.

For Donor organisations
A CD ROM on emergency relief was produced. The presentation, called "Through the eyes of Children", included some case studies and analysis of emergency relief operations from all over India highlighting lessons learnt and children's special needs.
